LET YOUR COVER LETTER COVER YOU:

There is a lot of content on how to write the best cover letter but is there one fits all cover letter format? Absolutely not, every cover letter needs to be adjusted to meet the requirements of the specific job that you are applying to. What needs to be clarified is the contents of the letter. Let us go through some important tips in cover letter writing.

WHAT TO ADD:

  • Accomplishments

Instead of rewriting your whole CV into a paragraph format, focus on one or two accomplishments that you have achieved in previous roles. This could be a goal achieved during your previous roles or the formation of newly implemented strategic plans. Furthermore, if these accomplishments can be expressed in the numerical form it will push your application a step ahead.

For entry-level applicants, your accomplishments should be centered on academic achievements.

  • How can you Add Value?

Write about ways in which you will be an added advantage if you were to get the job. This is when you can focus on specific skills that will contribute positively to the company that you are applying for. For example, you may mention a common problem for the line of industry that the company is in and propose an approach to solve the problem.

Another option is to look through the company website and spot some activities that they are involved in and propose ways in which you will add in their directives.

For entry-level applicants, try to zoom in to some hard skills and soft skills and present them in a way that shows how you would put them into practice.

WHAT NOT TO ADD:

  • Avoid the usual’s

Make yourself stand out! Different templates are available to guide you in the process of writing however don't be a cliché. Start with a catchy intro like ''I am excited to be applying for the position of XXX" instead of ‘‘I am applying for the position of XXX''.

Another tip is instead of using basic introductory titles of " Dear Hiring Manager '' or ''To whom it may concern'' try to do your research and find out the names of who you're addressing the letter. It will surely make your letter stand out.

  • Repetition of Content

Remember that you’re CV has this part covered, most of the content including education, experience, roles, and skills are all mentioned. Your goal is to mention things that go beyond the scope of your CV and add more value to your application besides the CV alone.

Finally, always be sure to do a thorough spell-check before hitting that send button. If possible have someone else look through it for you, four eyes are better than two.
